CUSTOM SPELLING TEST
Make an online spelling test from your own words
If you already have the word list, you do not need another generic spelling worksheet. Put the exact words into a custom game and turn them into audio-led spelling, multiple choice, jumbles, fill-in-the-blank questions, clues, and word-building practice.
When a custom spelling test is better than a premade list
Premade grade lists are useful when you need ideas. A custom test is better when the words have already been chosen by a teacher, homeschool lesson, tutor, spelling-bee coach, or the learner’s own mistakes.
The important part is matching practice to the words that will actually be tested. If Friday’s list contains twelve specific words, practising twenty unrelated “grade-level” words creates extra work without solving the immediate problem.
Step 1: collect and check the word list
Copy the words from the school sheet, lesson plan, or study list. Check the spelling before creating the game, especially for proper nouns, regional spelling variants, or specialist vocabulary. Keep the source list nearby until the game is saved.
For a mixed-difficulty list, you can still keep every word in one game. The learner’s results will show which items deserve more attention.
Step 2: create a custom spelling game
In Think Champion, create a custom spelling game using the target words. The same set can then be used for different challenge types, so “make my own spelling test” does not have to mean a single listen-and-type screen.
Your words become the practice
Use the exact school or study list and practise it in the browser. The Free Trial lets you try all six challenge modes with up to five words per game.
Step 3: choose how the learner should be tested
Different prompts reveal different gaps. Multiple Choice checks recognition. Spell It checks whether the learner can produce the word from audio. Word Jumble and Build Words make the learner reconstruct the spelling. Fill in the Blank and Guess the Word add sentence, definition, or clue context.
If the goal is a traditional oral spelling test, use audio-led spelling heavily. If the child also needs vocabulary practice, mix in definition and context-based challenges.
Step 4: review results and test the missed words again
A useful online spelling test should not end at the score. Look at which words were missed, which were correct only in easier recognition activities, and which are consistently strong. That gives you the next practice list automatically.
Think Champion tracks progress and word mastery by child profile. Pro adds Retry Wrong Answers and deeper word review for families using the tool regularly.
Use custom tests for more than school homework
The same workflow works for homeschool spelling, subject vocabulary, spelling-bee preparation, commonly misspelled words, Hindi spelling practice, or a small intervention list built from mistakes in a child’s writing. The key idea is the same: start with the exact words that matter, then turn them into repeatable practice.
