Six challenge types for the same spelling words
The challenge modes change the kind of recall while keeping the target words stable. A learner may recognise a spelling before they can produce it from audio, so mixing modes can expose different gaps.
Multiple Choice — recognition
Choose the correct spelling, definition, or answer from a small set of options. Use it for quick recognition and vocabulary checks, especially when a word is still unfamiliar.
Word Jumble — reconstruction
Unscramble letters into the target word. The learner has to reconstruct the spelling rather than only recognise the correct form.
Spell It — sound to spelling
Listen to the pronunciation and enter the spelling from the audio cue. This is the closest mode to a traditional oral spelling prompt and helps reveal whether the learner can move from sound to written form.
Fill in the Blank — context plus recall
Complete missing letters or words using the provided context. The learner gets some support but still has to retrieve part or all of the target form.
Guess the Word — meaning to word
Identify the target word from clues such as definitions, synonyms, phonetics, or other word context. This exercises vocabulary recognition as well as spelling familiarity.
Build Words — construction
Assemble the target from word parts where appropriate. This is useful when construction, roots, prefixes, or suffixes make the spelling easier to reason about.
How audio and vocabulary context fit across modes
Pronunciation, phonetics, definitions, synonyms, antonyms, and example sentences are supporting learning cues rather than a separate seventh game. Use them to make unfamiliar words understandable before asking for harder recall.
